DETECTION OF GAMMA RAYS OF UP TO 50 TeV FROM THE CRAB NEBULA

چکیده
Gamma rays with energies greater than 7 TeV from the Crab pulsar/nebula have been observed at large zenith angles, using the Imaging Atmospheric Technique from Woomera, South Australia. CANGAROO data taken in 1992, 1993 and 1995 indicate that the energy spectrum extends up to at least 50 TeV, without a change of the index of the power law spectrum. The observed di erential spectrum is (2:01 0:36) 10 (E=7TeV) 2:53 0:18 TeV cm s 1 between 7 TeV and 50 TeV. There is no apparent cut-o . The spectrum for photon energies above 10 TeV allows the maximum particle acceleration energy to be inferred, and implies that this unpulsed emission does not originate near the light cylinder of the pulsar, but in the nebula where the magnetic eld is not strong enough to allow pair creation from the TeV photons. The hard gamma-ray energy spectrum above 10 TeV also provides information about the varying role of seed photons for the inverse Compton process at these high energies, as well as a possible contribution of -gamma rays from proton collisions. Spectrum of Tev Gamma Rays from the Crab Nebula
The Crab Nebula has become established as the standard candle for TeV gamma-ray astronomy using the atmospheric Cherenkov technique. No evidence for variability has been seen. The spectrum of gamma rays from the Crab Nebula has been measured in the energy range 500 GeV to 8 TeV at the Whipple Observatory by the atmospheric Cherenkov imaging technique. Two methods of analysis involving independe...
متن کاملThe Energy Spectrum of Very High Energy Gamma Rays from the Crab Nebula as Measured by the H.E.S.S. Array
The goal of this thesis is to implement the methods developed for the HEGRA experiment to reconstruct the geometry and energy of the airshowers induced by the cosmic high-energy gamma rays into the software environment of the H.E.S.S. experiment. Furthermore, using the implemented algorithms, a search for the unpulsed emission is aimed in the energy range between 300 GeV and 20 TeV from the Cra...
متن کاملThe size of the emission region of VHE gamma rays in the Crab Nebula
The HEGRA system of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes provides for specially selected classes of events an angular resolution of better than 3'. By comparing the measured angular distribution of TeV gamma rays from the Crab Nebula with the distribution expected on the basis of Monte Carlo simulations, and with measurements of gamma rays from the point source Mrk 501, we conclude that the...
متن کاملSurveying the Tev Sky with Milagro
A wide field of view, high duty factor TeV gamma-ray observatory is essential for studying TeV astrophysical sources, because most of these sources are either highly variable or are extended. Milagro is such a TeV detector and has performed the deepest survey of the Northern Hemisphere sky at TeV energies. In addition to detecting the Crab Nebula and Mrk 421, which are known TeV sources, Milagr...
متن کاملWhipple 10m Telescope and Blazar Lightcurves
The Whipple collaboration pioneered the Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Technique (IACT) for the detection of Very High Energy (VHE) gamma rays. The Whipple 10 m gamma-ray telescope was located at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in Southern Arizona in the United States. The predecessor to VERITAS (Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System), this telescope was in operation from...
